Island guide
Brač
The most accessible Dalmatian island from Split. Also where you'll find Croatia's most photographed beach. The catch: they're not in the same place.
Getting there
Supetar is on the north coast. Bol — and Zlatni Rat — is on the south coast. They are 30 minutes apart by car. If your goal is Zlatni Rat, the catamaran direct to Bol saves a significant amount of time and hassle.
Zlatni Rat
A pebble spit that extends from the edge of Bol and shifts shape with the currents. Croatia's most photographed beach. In August it is crowded. In June or September it is still excellent and you can find a spot. The water on both sides is clear. Worth seeing once.
Supetar as a base
Quieter than Hvar, less visited, good restaurants. With the car ferry running roughly every two hours from Split, it's one of the easiest island bases in Dalmatia. A better option for families or anyone who wants easy access without the crowds that come with the catamaran routes.
Brač stone
The island's white limestone has been quarried for centuries. Diocletian's Palace in Split was built from it. So was part of the White House in Washington. The quarries near Pučišće on the north coast are still active. The stone is visibly present across the island — in walls, pavements, and old houses.
Practical notes
For a day trip from Split, the car ferry to Supetar works fine. If your day is specifically about Zlatni Rat, check the Krilo catamaran to Bol — it can save 90 minutes of bus connection each way.
