History

Was Marco Polo from Korčula?

Contested. Venice claims him, Korčula claims him. The historical record is genuinely ambiguous — and the house is worth visiting regardless.

The claim

Korčula has maintained since at least the 19th century that Marco Polo was born here in 1254. A house in the old town is identified as his birthplace. His surname — De Polo — appears in historical records from Korčula. The town sells Marco Polo wine, Marco Polo olive oil, and Marco Polo boat tours.

The evidence

Marco Polo's own account of his travels does not specify his birthplace. Historical records are incomplete and contested. Venice has an equally plausible competing claim. The scholarly consensus is that the question cannot be resolved with current evidence. This hasn't discouraged either city.

The house

The building identified as Marco Polo's house is a 15th-century tower in the old town — built at least a century after Marco Polo lived. Whether or not he was born there, it's a medieval tower in a medieval town, and it's worth the climb for the view over the rooftops and the channel.

The honest framing

Come to Korčula for the old town, the wine, and the food. The Marco Polo connection is a good story and a pleasant walk. Whether it's true matters less than the town it takes you through.
