Island guide

Šolta

The closest Dalmatian island to Split that almost nobody visits. One hour by car ferry. No nightlife, no superyacht harbour, no crowds. That is the point.

Getting there

Split → Rogač (Jadrolinija)
Journey: 1 hour Type: Car ferry Cars: Yes Frequency: Several daily

Rogač is the ferry port on Šolta's north coast. It is a functional harbour with a bus stop, not a destination. Most people head straight to Stomorska (east coast, fishing village, good restaurants) or Maslinica (west coast, small bay, quieter still). Both are about 20 minutes from Rogač by car or bus.

What Šolta is actually like

Šolta has around 1,700 year-round residents and no significant tourist infrastructure. There are no large hotels. No clubs. No yacht charter companies with fleets of 50 boats. The island economy runs on olive oil, wine, and a modest number of visitors who come precisely because it is not Hvar.

The olive oil is genuinely good — Šolta's oil has protected designation of origin status and has won international awards. A bottle from a local producer is a better souvenir than most things sold at harbour shops on the larger islands.

Beaches

Šolta's beaches are pebble and stone, mostly small and scattered around the coastline. They are not crowded. A few worth knowing:

Food

Stomorska has several fish restaurants along the harbour that are considerably less expensive than equivalent places in Hvar or Split. The quality is good. In Maslinica, the handful of restaurants are smaller and more local in character.

There is no bad time of year for the fish on Šolta. The season doesn't bring the same staff turnover and corner-cutting that affects restaurant quality on more touristed islands.

Šolta as a day trip from Split: The ferry frequency makes it practical as a day trip. Leave Split on an early sailing, spend the day, return in the evening. This works better than most Dalmatian islands for a one-day visit because the distances are short and the pace is unhurried.
